International Symposium: Women as Agents of Change
at Tue Jun 21 15:15:14 2011
The FPA in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat hosted an international symposium on Women as Agents of Change - why women are fundamental to political, economic and social transformation.

Speakers from around the world - among them Baroness Verma, Glenys Kinnock, Devaki Jain and Janet Benshoof - addressed and debated four areas of particular concern: the role of the media, political participation and inclusion, poverty, and violence and peace building. In his opening remarks the Commonwealth Secretary-General HE Kamalesh Sharma said investing in the education of girls and support for women was central to the Commonwealth's purpose. Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen outlined his concept of a civil approach to managing conflict and later in the evening addressed the audience at a reception at Marlborough House to celebrate the launch of 'Peace and Democratic Society'.
